Reclaiming Justice: Maternal Care Behind Bars
Bringing Doula Support and Training to the Arlington County Detention Facility
Birth in Color is proud to partner with the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office in a groundbreaking initiative to support pregnant individuals in custody. This innovative program, the first of its kind in Virginia, aims to provide doula support during childbirth and train incarcerated women to become community-based doulas.
Our collaboration reflects our commitment to ensuring every birthing person, regardless of their circumstances, receives compassionate care and advocacy. By addressing race and culture-related disparities in maternal healthcare, we are fostering a more equitable and inclusive approach to childbirth.
Through this program, individuals will gain essential skills, cultural competence, and advocacy tools that they can use to support others, both during and beyond their time in custody. This partnership not only uplifts pregnant individuals but also empowers women with opportunities for personal and professional growth as they reenter the community.
Together, we are redefining maternity care within the correctional system and championing reproductive justice for all.
